Apple’s upcoming foldable to have dual 48MP cameras, side-mounted fingerprint sensor?

Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone is perhaps one of the worst kept secrets currently in the consumer tech industry. The iPhone Fold—at least, that’s what we think it’ll be called—is expected to debut sometime next year, and it seems that a few more details about Cupertino’s foldable has leaked out.

According to serial Chinese leakster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the iPhone Fold will have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. That’s not too surprising, considering that most other book-style foldable smartphones such as the Galaxy Z Fold also use a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. On top of that, Digital Chat Station alleges that there won’t be Face ID or an in-display fingerprint sensor on the foldable too, due to size constraints.

Other specs about the upcoming iPhone Fold according to Digital Chat Station include a main 7.58-inch display, complete with an in-display front camera. The cover screen meanwhile will be 5.25-inches diagonally with a punch-hole cutout for its own front camera. Curiously, the leakster adds that the iPhone Fold will deploy a dual 48MP rear camera setup, again likely to keep the chassis thickness down. The hinge is also said to be very strong.

We expect the iPhone Fold, if and when it launches, to revitalize the stagnating foldable smartphone scene next year. While some Chinese smartphone makers have released some rather innovative designs over the last couple of years, other foldable manufacturers like Google and Samsung have been lagging behind. The latter for instance only recently announced the Galaxy Z TriFold, but was beaten to the punch by the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design.
