It looks like Apple may finally stop reserving its 120Hz ProMotion display exclusively for its Pro models. Recent leaks suggest that the base iPhone 17 models will be upgraded to match their Pro counterparts—and, frankly, the vast majority of mid-range smartphones released in recent years.

Multiple sources, including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, have pointed to this long-overdue change.

Apple’s ProMotion display uses LTPO OLED panels, which support variable refresh rates from 1Hz to 120Hz. This technology helps conserve battery life by dynamically adjusting the refresh rate based on what’s happening on screen.

While a 120Hz refresh rate is hardly groundbreaking in 2025—given that many mid-tier phones already offer it—it remains a highly requested feature among iPhone users. Bringing ProMotion to the base iPhone 17 could be a smart move for Apple, potentially winning over undecided buyers who’ve held off due to the lack of high-refresh-rate displays.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 lineup this September. Leaks also hint at a shake-up in the lineup, with the Plus model being replaced by a new “Air” model, rumored to be the slimmest phone in the industry.
