New sports categories for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Aside from cheering for the Malaysia team, there are five new sports being introduced for the first time which you may be interested to tune in to.

Softball / Baseball

While the softball competition isn’t exactly new as it has been introduced back in 1996 to 2008, the competition was removed from the programme for 2012 and 2016. Nevertheless, it is back this year for all to enjoy!

Surfing

The surfing competition is set to take place at the Diaozaki Coast Surfing Stadium. The game is scheduled to span across 4 days with the top two in each preliminary rounds advancing into the next round.

For the athletes who fails to qualify in the preliminary stages, they’ll have a second shot of advancing to the next round through a wild card match.

Skateboarding

Skateboarding competitions are divided into men’s and women’s categories. Each category include two types of competition which is the street competition and bowl competition.

Street races are held on a street-style straight track that includes steps, railings, benches and walls.

The referee completes the scoring based on the athlete’s originality, execution ability and number of skills.

Sports Climbing

The first Olympic medal in the history of sports climbing is expected at the Tokyo Olympics. A total of 20 men and women will compete for all-around events, including speed rock climbing, rock climbing and difficult rock climbing.

The rock climbing performance calculation method is unique, using the method of multiplying the project rankings. For example, an athlete ranked 1st, 5th and 2nd across three individual events, will receive a total of 10 points (1x5x2). In the end, the six lowest scoring players advanced to the final.

These six players will compete again in the final, and the player with the lowest score will be crowned champion.

Karate

The very first Olympic Karate event will be hosted at Nippon Budokan.

Unlike the usual five weight categories used by the World Karate Federation (WKF), The 2020 Tokyo Olympic karate team competition is divided into three weight classes that differs between the men’s and women’s category. Here’s the breakdown:

Weight ClassMenWomen
Light Weight-67kg-55kg
Middle Weight-75kg-61kg
Heavy Weight+75kg+61kg
