1 out of every 4 iPhones now made in India

Following the chaos that the global supply chain went through after President Trump’s tariffs last year, Apple doubled down on its production capacities in India, leading to a 53% increase in iPhone production. That means that nearly one in every four iPhones are now made in the South Asian country.

According to a report from Bloomberg, 2025 saw Apple assemble approximately 55 million iPhones in India, a significant rise from the 36 million devices coming from India the year before. As a comparison, Apple typically makes about 220 million to 230 million iPhones a year.

India currently assembles all new iPhone models, as well as older iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 devices too. Apple is also set to further expand their presence in India, as they prepare to launch Apple Pay in the country later this year.

This rise in Indian-made iPhones was no doubt down to the tariffs levied on China by the US. China is still the dominant player in iPhone production, but the uncertainty caused by geopolitical tensions meant that for Apple at least, it made a lot of sense to find alternative suppliers and assembly lines for their hardware.

It also probably helped that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was quick to give Apple plenty of incentives and subsidies to bring and expand iPhone production in India. This would’ve played a crucial role in offsetting the structural and logistical disadvantages of building an iPhone in India compared to China, which has a more robust supply chain and logistics system in place.

Having said that, assembling an iPhone in India will still cost more to Apple than building it in China or even Vietnam. That’s let to Apple and even rival Samsung to lobby for more government support, especially as India’s current subsidies for smartphone productions ends later this month.
